ROTARY YOUTH EXCHANGE PROGRAM STUDENT INFORMATION HANDOUT

PROGRAM DEFINITION

1) Service Clubs all over the world …. Over 1.4 million members
2) One student for one school year, approximately 10 months
3) True exchange program. An inbound student will attend your high school.
4) Excellent preparation for your year abroad. Train during your sophomore year, and spend your junior
year abroad.

GOALS

1) Further international goodwill and understanding
2) Broaden outlook on the world
3) Ambassadors for the United States of America
4) Learn about a new culture
5) Possibility of mastering another language
6) Advance the education of the participants

ELIGIBILITY

1) Sophomores, or soon-to-be sophomores
2) Good character, reputation, and involvement in and out of school
3) Above average academically, a minimum of 3.0 GPA
4) For all students, not just students of Rotarians

APPLICATION PROCEDURE

1) Complete the Preliminary Application, contact school counseling office or local Rotary club
2) Interview / Selection by local Rotary Club committee members
3) Final application to District Committee by October 31st.
4) In-home interview by a District Committee member in November or December
5) Initial outbound student nominee orientation in January
6) Additional orientations/activities from February to June

COSTS

1) Outbound fee for orientations, transportation, meals, paperwork, blazer, business cards (*Some or all this fee may be paid by the sponsoring Rotary Club) Fee can change each year.
2) Air Travel $1500 to $5,500, depending on the country
3) Emergency fund of $500, if unused, returnable on completion of the exchange
4) Insurance ($700 – $1200)
5) Miscellaneous expenses for gifts and optional trips ($500 – $2000)
6) The hosting Rotary Club overseas supplies a small monthly allowance
