ROTARY DISTRICT 5100 YOUTH EXCHANGE SPEECH CONTEST INFORMATION
The theme for the 2024 Speech Contest is ” Create Hope in the World”.
Gordon R. McInally, the RI President –Â calls for Rotary to create hope in the world by working for peace and mental wellbeing.
Your speech will be given at the District Conference in May. All students are required to present a 5-minute speech:
- You may only use 3 X 5 note cards for reference and organization.
- No visuals, posters or any kind of electronic device is allowed for your presentation. Y
You will be among a group of 8 to 10 other students as an audience and will be judged by 2 or 3 Rotarians or associates for the first round. After the initial round of speeches are completed, 2 or 3 winners will be announced for each group, then another round of speeches will occur. The final winners will be then selected with 2 inbound and 2 outbound candidates as the finalists. The finalists will do their presentation during the talent show to an audience of about 300 to 500. There are no excuses for not completing a speech unless permission is granted by the Chairman of D-5100 Youth Exchange, Bill Pauslen. Arrangements must be made 7 days in advance notice to Mark Derry and the Chairman for any request of absence and the reasons.
Your speech is an opportunity to “IMAGINE” what Rotary can be, do, or whatever you imagine. It is also a learning experience as you will over the length of a career of employment or being a community member, do presentations necessary for advancement and commitment to others. We recommend that give your speech at a Rotary Club regular meeting so that the members will continue to support the Youth Exchange Program. Outbounds, you should also try to do this in the future language you will acquire, think of the powerful impact you will make to your new hosting Rotary Club, and it is a very big thank you!!
Your speech may be humorous, serious, something about what you may have experienced relating to the theme, or a story you weave into the topic. Practice ahead of time with your family, or do it in a class at school or at church. You may even know a Rotary Club member who inspires you and could help you polish or improve your ideas. Be creative, have fun composing your thoughts and use different elements to bring together your ideas. Start with an outline of ideas, organize them, then practice it to have an idea of how long the speech lasts. You should relate the theme several times in the speech and possibly use specific quotes or passages that you feel are important to the theme.
Take time to search on the internet or get a book on how to give a good speech. Start with the Rotary International website at www.rotary.org or www.district5100.org for ideas that help.
